// DANCE with ME ITW //

Brooklyn Art Guy Fashion Guy Dance Guy, Thomas Gibbons gives us the answers we need to hear.

Watch him open his heart behind the blinds. We love him. You should toO.

I love your website ( and your name reminds me of the famous Gibson guitar. Do you play guitar?

Thanks! And no I don't, but my dad and sister do a little bit.  I love the guitar.

 Do you believe in destiny?

In the sense that everything happens for a reason, yes.

 Are you in love?

Not at the moment, but I recently had my heart broken.

Looking at your creative work, the films of Guy Maddin came to my mind.

Anyone you like in particular in cinema today?

Recently, I discovered Marlon Riggs’ “Tongues Untied” from 1989, which everyone should see. I also love Todd Solondz, Leos Carax (“Holy Motors” remains one of my favorites), Charlie Kaufman and the film that Charles Atlas made with Lady Bunny.

 Any brother or sister?

I have one sister named Katie.  She’s my other half.

 When were your born?

November 28th...I’m a Sagittarius.

Belgium is known for having an excellent dancing culture (but probably not scene). Would you agree?

Absolutely. I'm not sure how you define "scene", but I know a lot of good things happen in Belgium.

Could you live anywhere else in the world but in Brooklyn?

Believe it or not, I really love Los Angeles. A lot of my friends from New York have moved out there and it has a burgeoning dance/art scene that I'm interested in exploring. Also, the blue skies and proximity to nature make me happy...and palm trees!

Do you prefer green circles or blue squares?

Tough one. I’ll go with green circles

In math, do you prefer to add or multiply?

If Mary Poppins was a fruit, what would she be?

An apple. Although I see her more as a stick of gum

Do you believe in life after death?

I don’t (as much as I'd like to).

How much do you love or hate the US?

That’s a complicated question.  I love the US by the token that it’s my home, but I don’t have a Nationalist spirit. Also, I hold deep issues with our foreign policy, agricultural practices and gun-control laws, but, politics aside, it is a fascinating place geographically and culturally.

 Have you kissed someone today?

Only hugs.

When were you last time in Europe?

You dance, model, do you sing as well?

I try not to! I’ve always been embarrassed by my singing voice, but I’m getting less self-conscious about it as I get older.

Who dances to your taste today?

Most recently, I've liked dances by Andy Degroat/ Cat Galasso, Ryan McNamara, Anne Imhof, Jillian Pena and FlucT.

 Are you into musicals?

I loved musicals as a child and they’ve certainly informed who I am in many ways.  After college I danced with a touring company of “A Chorus Line”, which remains my favorite musical along with some other classics.  Stylistically, I don’t like contemporary musical theater, but of course there are some exceptions. Over the years my taste has evolved away from commercial theater and narrative in general, but my current work, in some ways, comments on this kind of artifice.

Does Barbra Streisand mean something to you?

Definitively. Many people only know Barbara as an entertainer, but she is also an incredibly singular aesthete. I own her book, “My Passion For Design”, which chronicles the design and construction of her New England style Malibu cottage. There are pictures of every tiny detail from handmade valances, to a functioning watermill to a subterranean Victorian shopping mall complete with a doll shop. I think Barbara Streisand is a freak of nature and I love it.  She is one of those few people, in my eyes, who gets away with being so ridiculous just by the virtue that she is undeniably herself.

How would you describe your body?

 Do you ski?

As a kid. Not anymore.

 Do you surf?

Who would you be if you were a woman?

Myself, but as a woman.

Do you like the works of Maurice Béjart?

Sure. He’s not my go-to choreographer, but his movements are architectural and sensual. I like this combination.

 Stravinsky or Rihanna?

Are you haunted by a memory in particular?

Seeing my late uncle, John Gibbons lying on my grandparent’s sofa in 1993 several months before he died of AIDS. Bald, emaciated and smiling ear to ear.

Did you have a happy childhood or is that irrelevant to who you are?

It was more complicated than just being happy or sad and it’s definitely relevant to who I am.

How much rest do you need?

8 solid hours. Every night.

What was your last creation and what will be the next thing you do?

I shared an excerpt from a larger work I am making called "Every Man's Home (Is HIs WIfe's Castle)" at Brooklyn Studios for Dance. It unpacks questions about the transactions of queerness, daily performances of vanity/domesticity and the inner-monologue of The Gaze.  Really though, I just hump a bunch of tennis racquets and lick electrical outlets...If you're in NYC, I'll be performing more of this work in HOT! Festival at Dixon Place on July 7th. Come come!

Do you want to add something to these existential questions and answers (!)?

No thank you.

Your platinum hair is beautiful, it reminds me of Jayne Mansfield. Do you have Irish or Nordic blood?

No, I don't. But I do get asked that a lot.

Do you like the snow, or is it all about the unbeatable California sun?

The cool part of California where I lived in means I get the California sun, the beaches, and also the snow. It's the best of every world.

 Do you surf?

No. But I have tried a couple times.

How warm is it today and where are you?

It's 36degrees (Fahrenheit) and I'm in my apartment in New York. Definitely not California weather.

 Do you ski?

Yes! It's my absolute favorite winter sport.

Any bad dreams recently or a reoccurring nightmare?

Not specifically, but I’ve been watching too much Law & Order lately so I'm constantly afraid that I'm going to get shot out of nowhere or ran over by a car. That's kind of a nightmare?

Would you rather be Peter Pan or Robin Hood?

I was going to say Peter Pan because he gets to wear tights, but now that I think about it both of them wear tights! But I'll still stick with Peter Pan.

I heard you were a professional gymnast. What did you love and hate the most about it?

I loved being part of the team. We were all family. We would see each other every day, travel with each other, and all compete together. I really felt part of something. I think what I hated the most was the pressure at such a young age. You are constantly pushed to learn new skills, and go to bigger competitions, and it’s a lot to handle when you're young.

If you could choose, where would you live?

Back in California. Either a nice house in the Oakland hills or on the beach at Capitola.

Are you more East Coast or West Coast, or is it all about the people you hang out with?

I'm so so much more west coast. People over here are weird. Haha, just kidding. It’s about the people you hang out with, but there are some significant differences between East Coast and West Coast people. It's almost like their priorities are different.

You travel a lot. Who do you miss the most?

Oh god. That's hard. Um… probably my friends from home, Tori, Lydia, Priya, and Lauren. They'll love that I said their names.

 A favorite photographer or artist?

John Singer Sargent is my favorite artist. A literal painter. I’ve been studying him and his work since high school. I also think Harley Weir, the photographer, is extremely talented.

What did you watch last, and did you like it?

I watched the movie "Panic Room" on the flight back to New York. I love that movie. Who doesn't love a young Jodie Foster and an even younger Kristen Stewart?!

Have you ever dyed your hair?

Oh yes. First time I dyed my hair was in 7th grade and I have never had my natural color for longer than a year. It's always changing.

 Where will you be tomorrow?

Hmmm, I know that everyone would want to hear at some big exciting photo shoot or event, but honestly at Trader Joe's first thing in the morning, I have no food.

Where will you be in one hour?

Williamsburg! I'm leaving after this to go meet up with some friends.

How would you describe your body?

Well I have skin and some freckles and some hair. Yeah, that's how I would describe it.

 What are you wearing now?

A friends girl jeans and some old sweater I’ve had since high school.

 Anything you don't eat?

Chicken feet. I've tried them and I just can't do it.

 Do you like Mariah Carey?

I am Mariah Carey...

 How tall are you?

 Do you own a car?

I am a proud owner of a 2006 gold Ford focus and his name is Brad. But he's living back in California with my parents now.

How fast did your answer these questions?

Haha, um… fairly fast!

 How fast can you run?

I think I ran a 6 minute Mile once back in school. That’s fast, right?

Are you anxious about time passing?

Yes. The future is scary, but also so so exciting.
