Hi Jack! Where are you joining us from today?

I’m in Nashville, Tennessee—well, technically Franklin, Tennessee, which is where I grew up.

My parents are huge Dexter fans, so they’ll be very jealous about this interview! I’ve seen the first four episodes of the new season, and it ends on a major cliffhanger where Dexter approaches your character. What’s it like for you waiting for the latest episodes to come out?

I’m right there with you—I’ve only seen the first four episodes too! So, like you, I’m just waiting with bated breath to see what happens next.

What was it like stepping back into Harrison after a four-year break since New Blood?

It felt amazing but also nerve-wracking. Coming back to such a rich story and spectacular character was unforgettable. I was definitely nervous, but not as nervous as when I first started New Blood, because that was my first big role.

One of the first scenes we shot was Harrison’s nightmare sequence, where he tries to revive Dexter. I remember thinking, “Oh man, can I do this again after so much time?” But as soon as we started, it felt like no time had passed. Michael [C. Hall] even turned to me and joked, “Weren’t we just here last week?” The set is such a fantastic environment—everyone says that, but I genuinely think this is the best crew I’ve ever worked with. Even though it’s a dark show and my character is rarely in a good place, the experience of making it is exceptional.

This season’s cast is major—Uma Thurman, Peter Dinklage… the list goes on. How did you react to all these announcements?

I was floored. Every time they announced someone new, I’d post on Instagram like, “Look who else we got!” My friends kept saying, “You’re kidding—Peter Dinklage too?!” And I’d tell them, “You don’t even know the half of it!”

You’ve spent a lot of time on screen with Michael C. Hall. How has working with him influenced your own approach to Harrison?

I don’t know if I can put into words how much I’ve learned from Michael. From day one of New Blood, he made it clear I could always come to him with questions—and believe me, I had a million of them.

One piece of advice that really stuck with me was when I asked him how to make choices about Harrison’s conflicting emotions. Sometimes I felt like I had to pick one direction. Michael said, “Do all of them.” That’s how you create a complex, layered character—especially someone as conflicted as Harrison.

Harrison is constantly wrestling with his father’s “legacy”. What’s it like portraying that?

It’s heavy. Harrison’s been through so much. In New Blood, he’s searching for answers. In Resurrection, he’s trying to be normal—but life keeps pushing him back toward Dexter. It’s one thing to feel like no one understands you. It’s another to find someone who does—and then lose them. That makes everything heavier.

The show is known for its dark humour and gore. What’s it like filming those gruesome scenes?

It’s a blast—but also jarring. The dismemberment scene, for example, was very intricately choreographed: which body part goes in which bag, where the blood squirts, how I angle everything for the camera. The props felt creepily real, but because I was so focused on the choreography, the grossness didn’t really hit me until I watched playback. That’s when I thought, “Wow, this is gnarly—maybe the goriest scene I’ve seen on the show.”

This season also explores society’s fascination with serial killers. Has playing Harrison made you more interested in true crime?

Funny enough, I actually did a whole unit on serial killers in high school during a forensic science class. So I came into New Blood knowing more about real serial killers than I knew about Dexter! Working on the show did spark that interest again—especially walking through the set of Prater’s Vault with all the creepy memorabilia. They mixed fictional killers from Dexter with real-world killers like Ed Gein and the Zodiac. It was very interesting… but also made me feel deeply uneasy.

I think that we, as humans, are fascinated by outliers—the best and worst extremes of humanity. That always attracts our attention and curiosity. Dexter explores that brilliantly by taking someone who shouldn’t be relatable and making him human. We get to watch a monster slowly become a man.

Finally, what’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned about yourself as an actor through New Blood and Resurrection?

That it’s all about commitment. As actors, it’s easy to get trapped trying to recreate the version of a scene we picture in our heads. But we’re not the painters—we’re in the painting. Throwing yourself fully and blindly into the story—trusting your cast, your crew, and the moment—always pays off. And when you’re working with actors like these, you can jump off the cliff knowing someone will catch you.
